Lithuania’s military is conducting exercises in Klaipėda and the Curonian Spit this week to train for the protection of critical infrastructure, with the country’s Rapid Response Forces activated for the drills, the armed forces said Wednesday.
The exercises are focused on the rapid redeployment of troops and equipment, the execution of standby and peacetime missions, and the military’s ability to operate alongside other state institutions, the military said in a statement.
Personnel from the Navy, Land Forces, Air Force and Military Police are taking part in the training. The exercises are being conducted in cooperation with the Military Command Board and coordinated with the Public Security Service, the Klaipėda State Seaport Authority and other civilian agencies.
Training activities are taking place in the territory of the Port of Klaipėda, the port channel and the Curonian Spit. Soldiers, naval vessels, high-speed boats and Air Force helicopters are carrying out tactical tasks aimed at improving rapid-response capabilities, the protection of key facilities and coordination with civilian authorities.
The drills come as Lithuania has stepped up security measures around strategic infrastructure amid growing concern about potential threats in the Baltic region.
