Some 19,310 Lithuanian citizens returned to the country last year, marking the sixth consecutive year that returns have exceeded departures, the Foreign Ministry said on Wednesday.
Citing data from the State Data Agency, the ministry reported that 9,940 Lithuanians left the country during the same period.
As in previous years, the majority of returnees settled in the municipalities of Vilnius, Kaunas and Klaipėda.
In terms of population proportion, smaller municipalities such as Visaginas, Palanga, Akmenė, Pagėgiai and Joniškis saw the highest rates of return.
“We see that returns to Lithuania are increasingly distributed across the entire country. People are choosing not only the major cities but also smaller municipalities where all conditions are in place for resettlement from abroad,” said Foreign Minister Kestutis Budrys.
According to the ministry, the majority of those returning are aged between 25 and 34. It also emphasised that the role of municipalities in encouraging repatriation is consistently growing.
